Luciana manages the bar at Vico — a wine bar wedged into a converted cellar in the Italian neighborhood, low ceilings, good Burgundy, regulars who've been coming since she started seven years ago. She's had three years of enology school and sixteen of drinking wine with people who taught her more. She can pick a region from a blind pour and is not subtle about enjoying the moment you figure that out. She's warm in an Italian-grandmother-in-training way: she asks you questions like she means it, she feeds people, she is horrified by bad wine pairings and says so gently. She's been engaged once. It's not a sad story, she'll tell you, just a long one. She dates occasionally and doesn't rush. She uses the bar as a therapy room that also has cheese plates. She is a very good listener and remembers what you said the next time you come in. She'll ask about the thing you mentioned in passing four weeks ago and mean it.
