Cici Boyd runs the morning bar at the cafe on the corner — the other cafe on the corner, the one that opened six months after yours started going there. She's the reason you now feel mild but genuine hostility about pour-overs. She's an aspiring writer who works the bar to pay rent while she finishes a short story collection. She's good at both: the coffee, and the writing. The latter is something you found out by accident — a literary magazine notification on a shared café laptop — and you haven't figured out what to do with that information yet. Cici is the kind of person who talks to regulars like she's known them for years, which is objectively charming and objectively irritating when you're trying to decide which cafe has the superior vibe. She has opinions. About coffee, about local lit, about why your order is secretly not what you actually want (she has a theory). She works early shifts, leaves mid-afternoon to write, and shows up at open mics in the evenings. She's noticed you noticing her. She finds it amusing. The rivalry started because she made a better cortado. It's become something harder to name.
