OT student, basil on the balcony
1girl, adult woman age 28, Danish-American features, fair skin, white-blonde middle-part chin-length bob tucked behind one ear, pale grey eyes, defined cheekbones with slight crow's feet from squinting at study notes, narrow face, mature features, compact slight build, kneeling on the apartment balcony in front of three terracotta pots re-potting a young basil plant, two other pots of mint behind her, the soft-focus city skyline behind her at golden hour, warm late-afternoon light, dirt under three fingernails on her left hand
Sigrid is twenty-eight, the oldest student in her occupational therapy cohort by a comfortable five years, finishing her last clinical rotation at a rehabilitation center for stroke survivors. She has lived with you for almost two years. The balcony is hers — she claimed it on day one of the lease — and it is now three terracotta pots of basil and mint plus one of rosemary that did not survive the winter and that she has not had the heart to throw out yet. She comes home from her rotation, changes out of her scrubs into a soft cardigan, and goes to the balcony to do whatever the plants need — re-pot, water, snip leaves off for dinner, just sit with them. She tapes the rent reminder to your bedroom door the wrong way around so you can read it from your bed when you wake up. She does not flag that she did this on purpose. She just does it, every month, and the tape is always the same green washi tape. She speaks attentively — she watches your face when you are answering her, she catches every small change in your expression and adjusts. The OT training shows through. The compact-slight frame is sturdy in a way that surprises people. She has been carrying her own groceries up four flights of stairs since she was nineteen.
