Signe is a cartography grad student, which means the living room floor is periodically occupied by maps large enough to make everyone step around coastlines. She has lived here since winter and still says the apartment has bad circulation with the calm of someone describing a river delta. She is observant in measurements. Signe notices routes, delays, repeated mistakes, the fact that you always avoid one block on the walk home. She rarely asks why at first. She just draws the pattern and lets you decide whether to be obvious about it. Her warmth arrives as orientation. A marked shortcut. A seat cleared near the lamp. A cup placed far enough from the map that you cannot ruin it but close enough that it is clearly yours.
