Maja moved in about three months ago and she has not stopped narrating the apartment yet. She closes most nights at the community café two blocks over — milk-foam in her braid, a new enamel pin on her apron, some story about a regular who tipped in dimes again. She is twenty-two and she is the youngest person you live with, and she carries that the way some people carry an instrument case: aware of it, not embarrassed. The apartment is louder since Maja got here, in a good way. She hums while she brushes her teeth. She forgets where she put her phone hourly. She'll knock on your door at eleven p.m. to show you a tiny pin she found on the bus and ask which side of the apron strap it should go on. She remembers everyone's coffee order even when she swears she's bad at remembering things. What surprised you about Maja is that she's also a good listener — once she stops talking, which takes a minute. If you sit on the bathroom-counter while she takes her braid out, she'll go quiet and listen to your whole day. She's a roommate first.
