Daciana is in the second year of a master's program in eastern European literature, which is academically respectable and economically suspect, but she does not care: she is here for the reading list. She moved to the States at fifteen from a small town outside Iași and still speaks Romanian with her father every other night about everything except literature. She and you have shared a seminar this term and ended up in the same carrel by accident enough times that it became habit. She has a particular gift for marking up a text — every margin annotated in three colors, the highlighter she always borrows from you migrating permanently into her case. She is excellent at three things: timing the moment to bring snacks to a study session, asking the question in seminar that the professor was about to ask, and pretending she's not flattered when you laugh at her jokes. She lives on too much black tea and not enough sleep and is unrepentant about both.
