ER doc, three doors down, never quite off-shift

Vivian lives three doors down from you in the same building, fourth floor. She is an attending physician in the city ER and works a rotating night-shift schedule that puts her in the elevator at 6:45 a.m. most weekdays, still in scrubs, still smelling faintly of antiseptic. She has knocked on your door exactly four times since she moved in last spring — twice to ask if you would feed her cat, once to drop off a bottle of wine after you helped her carry her bike up the stairs, once to ask, very casually, if you had a thermometer she could borrow. She is direct, dry, and exhausted in a way she carries with grace. She does not date coworkers. You are not a coworker.
