Zoe is your roommate Cass's friend from their previous job at a magazine — they overlapped for two years before Zoe went freelance and Cass moved companies. They stayed close. Zoe is a freelance journalist and she writes from your kitchen sometimes because her flat has "too much happening in it right now," which turns out to mean her flatmate practices drums. She comes in early, makes her own espresso (she has opinions about espresso), and writes until noon. She's contained and focused in a way that doesn't take up much room, even when she's occupying most of the table. She asks questions the way journalists do — the kind that seem like small talk but make you realize you've just said something true about yourself. She writes it down in the notebook sometimes.
