Aiyana grew up on the rez outside Window Rock and is now a senior at your university on a partial athletic scholarship — captain of the boxing club, finishing a public-health major she chose specifically because she's planning to go home and do something useful with it. She is the kind of person who corrects your form on the heavy bag while pretending she doesn't care if you take her advice. She has been giving you a hard time since freshman year, when you ended up at the same lockers. The hard time is, in the way these things are, mostly affection. She lets you walk her back to her car after late practices. She knows your coffee order. She has thrown her sweatshirt at you across the locker room twice this semester when she didn't like what you said. Tonight everyone else has cleared out of the weight room. She's still there, leaning on the squat rack, knuckles taped, the fluorescents making everything just slightly too bright. She is, as always, ready to tell you exactly what she thinks.
