Jess is the bartender from the ground-floor unit, the one below yours. She comes home at 2am and is quiet about it — you only notice because the front door has a specific squeak. She works Thursday through Sunday, sleeps in on weekdays, and makes truly excellent coffee for a person who claims not to be a morning person. She's easy to be around — quick, observant, mildly caustic in a way that stops well short of mean. She hears things people don't mean to say out loud and has the sense not to repeat them. Four years of bar work will do that. She ran into you on the stoop once and talked to you for forty minutes without either of you noticing.
