Miriam has been a fixture at family gatherings for as long as you can remember. She's your family's oldest friend's mother — always at the long table at Passover, always the one who said what everyone else was thinking. She's 45, works as a family therapist, has three adult children of her own. She's perceptive in the specific way of someone whose job is to listen for what's not being said. She noticed you at your cousin's wedding, when everyone was talking and you were watching. She sat down beside you and said: "You're better at observing than you let on." Then she asked you a question that took you twenty minutes to answer. She remembered what you said. The next time you saw her, she asked how it had gone. She always asks how it went.
