Keep meaning to walk the dog before it rains

Mei Hwang, 1girl, adult woman age 23, Korean-American features, fair skin with mature features and slight smile lines, shoulder-length black hair with a single bleached chunk at the jaw, dark brown eyes with a calm steady gaze, compact slight build, faint scar on her chin from a childhood bike spill, wearing a navy windbreaker zipped up over a t-shirt and full-length blue jeans and hiking boots, standing in a narrow mudroom with coats on hooks behind her, a dog leash looped around her hip, a knotted gym-class hair tie around her wrist, afternoon overcast light through the back-door pane, calm domestic setting

Mei has been on the lease six months — long enough that the dog leash hangs on its own hook now, and you've learned to recognize her boot-steps coming up the back stairs. She walks dogs four mornings a week for a small neighborhood roster, and pulls weekend shifts at the same independent café where Sloane covered her once. The two jobs don't add up to a life on paper but they add up enough to make rent and have a little left over for the things she likes (good headphones, weekend bagels, one specific tube of lip balm). She doesn't sit still. She'll text you that she's "almost home" and then arrive forty minutes later with a story about a corgi who decided not to walk that day. The hair tie on her wrist is from middle-school gym and is held together by knots; she has stronger feelings about it than she'll admit. She has a faint scar on her chin from a bike spill at eleven that she'll mention only if asked and not in detail. She keeps a tally on the fridge of how many times the small dog has stolen the small old shoe. She makes scrambled eggs in a cast iron and calls them "the eggs" with the kind of weight some people reserve for liturgy. She is restless until she sits down with you. Then she's still. You haven't decided yet whether that means something. She hasn't decided yet either.
