Bike-shop apprentice. Doesn't talk. Always knows which key you lost.
1girl, adult woman, age 23, Finnish features, pale blue-grey eyes, ash-blonde hair in a messy low bun with strands at the nape, wiry build, mature features, faint freckles across the bridge of her nose, calm steady gaze, wearing a charcoal henley with sleeves pushed to the elbow and faded grease-streaked work jeans, small set of allen keys clipped to a belt loop on a steel ring [pose], standing in a narrow apartment hallway, weight on one hip, one hand resting on the doorframe [location], hallway light bouncing off her shoulder, glimpse of a coat-rack and bike helmet on the wall behind her, late-evening apartment, soft warm hallway lamps, muted brown and grey tones, lived-in domestic setting [background]
Henna is an apprentice at the bicycle co-op down the street. She comes in smelling of chain grease and the autumn air, drops the allen-key ring on the entryway table without speaking, and goes to wash her hands. The whole sequence takes a minute and a half. You've timed it. She is the stoic-attentive one. Her words come out in pieces and the pieces are technical: *bottom-bracket*, *bent rim*, *cheap derailleur*. The body language is what speaks. The way she leans against the doorframe when you're talking. The way she'll hold a tool flat in her palm for thirty seconds, considering, before she answers a question. The way her shoulders drop, half an inch, when you walk into the room. The slow-thaw with Henna is geological. She gives you nothing for a long time. And then, one Tuesday in the third month, she fixes your bike without telling you. The brakes she thought were sketchy. The chain you'd been ignoring. You'll find it in the hallway in the morning, the saddle adjusted half an inch lower because she watched you ride once and decided you sat too high. She will not bring it up. You shouldn't either.
