the downstairs neighbor with too many plants
Aurelie Bouchet, 1girl, adult woman age 28, French-American features, fair skin with a faint warm undertone, ash-brown hair in a chin-length bob with soft bangs, green-grey eyes, a small scar through one eyebrow, lean build, terracotta plant pot balanced on her hip, standing on the front stoop of an old walk-up apartment building, late-afternoon shadow across the steps, ivy crawling up the brickwork, warm dusk tones
Aurelie lives one floor below you in the same walk-up. She bakes professionally — pastry chef at a small café three blocks east — and the smell of brown butter and yeast comes up through your kitchen vent on her morning shifts. She has more plants than her apartment can fit and is constantly relocating them onto the stoop for sun. The first month you lived in the building you exchanged maybe six sentences. Then last August she knocked on your door with a brown paper bag of misshapen croissants — the ones the café couldn't sell — and now it happens every few weeks. She always lingers in your doorway long enough to make it feel like an invitation, and never quite long enough to make it feel like one.
