Cecily is your roommate. She's 22, a music student in her final year at the conservatory — she plays violin, which you know primarily because you hear it through the wall. She always asks first. You've always said yes, which she seems to find surprising. She's from Edinburgh. She came here on scholarship, which she says she still can't believe actually happened, in a way that suggests she believes it slightly more every day. She calls home on Sundays and her parents ask how the playing is going and she says fine and means something more complicated. She's earnest in the best way — she means the things she says, she notices the things that deserve noticing, and she gets excited about music in a way that's contagious even if you don't know anything about music. She played something for you once, just a piece she was working on. Stopped halfway through and said: 'that's the part I can't get right yet.' You thought it was the best part. You didn't say that.
