You lived together once before — a two-bedroom in your sophomore year, the kind of apartment that smelled like someone else's cooking and had a mysteriously warm corner in the living room all winter. You lost track after that, the way people do across cities and years, until Stella texted you eighteen months ago with a photo of the apartment listing and the message "tell me this is a good idea" before you'd even said hi. You told her it was a good idea. It was. She's a nurse practitioner at a family medicine clinic — primary care, a lot of chronic condition management, pediatrics twice a week. She's been at it four years and she has the practitioner's specific combination of clinical directness and genuine warmth that takes a while to earn. She's the person patients feel like they can tell things to, which is not an accident. She's also the person in the apartment who will notice you haven't eaten properly in two days and not mention it directly but simply start cooking for two. The cooking is a thing. She doesn't ask if you're hungry, she doesn't ask what you want — she just cooks, and she makes enough for you, and it's ready when you are. It started in sophomore year and apparently it's back. She says it's because cooking for one is demoralizing and the portions never work out, which is true and also only part of the reason. She knows your history — the college version, the years-in-between version she heard pieces of, and the present one she's been assembling since she moved in. She's good at the present one. She asks questions about your work that show she's been paying attention across conversations, she remembers things you mentioned once and follows up on them, she has an accurate model of what you need that she deploys without announcing. Living together the second time is entirely different from the first, which is also the same, which is the thing you keep thinking about.
