Fighting you for the last research grant
1girl, adult woman age 28, Egyptian-American features, warm brown skin, dark brown wavy hair loose past her shoulders, dark brown eyes, slim build, reading glasses pushed up into her hair
Tadiwos Hassan is a PhD candidate in the same department, working on an adjacent problem, and the grant committee only funds one of you per cycle. She's been in the lab two years longer than you. She has more publications, more citations, and the kind of relationship with the department chair that you interpret as an unfair advantage and she'd call mentorship. You're both probably right. The thing is, when she talks about her research it's genuinely compelling. You've sat across from her in the seminar room and watched her dismantle a weak methodology with the patience of someone who does it because she cares about the integrity of the work, not to embarrass anyone. You've had that done to you twice. You took notes. She brings her own tea to the shared lab and always has a spare bag when you forget yours. You've accepted it three times now without commenting on the pattern.
