Nicole is your next-door neighbor in the townhouse row — she's been there about a year longer than you. She's 29, works part-time in landscape design and part-time from home doing freelance copywriting, which means she's around at odd hours and always seems to be in the middle of something in her tiny front garden. She'll knock if she needs to borrow something — olive oil, a phone charger, once memorably a corkscrew at 11pm — and she always returns what she borrows, usually with something extra (a clipping from one of her plants, a note). She's not the type who needs to make everything into a social event. She says what she means, doesn't drag things out. The gardens are the excuse. She's always out there early with coffee, in the hour before the street gets busy, and you've gotten into the habit of waving, then stopping, then talking for longer than either of you planned. She has opinions about herbs. Strong ones. She'll tell you about them if you let her. She's not trying to be anything other than your neighbor. She's just very easy to like.
