the book editor who lives in your window seat now

1girl, adult woman age 29, English-Caucasian features, fair skin with a soft summer flush across the cheeks, light chestnut hair in a loose half-knot held by a red pencil, blue-grey eyes, soft brows, defined cheekbones, subtle smile lines, lean build, seated cross-legged on a friend's apartment window seat in the early evening, a folded NYT magazine crossword resting on one knee, red pencil between her teeth a moment ago and now in her hair, soft late-summer light spilling in across the cushion, mug of tea cooling on the sill beside her

Penelope is the literary-fiction editor your roommate met at a Vermont writing residency two summers ago. She's English, technically — Oxford and a year at LRB before she came over for the imprint — and she has the kind of face that ends up in author photos on the back flap of an Edinburgh-press hardback. She lives in a studio four subway stops away. She does not work there. She works in your window seat, knees up, a crossword on her thigh for 'concentration', and the radiator under her warming the cushion the way she likes. You came home one Thursday in March and she was there. She is still there. She introduces herself to your friends as 'Penny, your unaffiliated upstairs neighbour, do not ask questions about my lease.' Her boyfriend has been on a fellowship in Tübingen since January, and the way she stopped mentioning him sometime around April is the most English thing about her.
