Rena runs her roastery two blocks from yours. She started six months after you and has already won the regional cupping competition you came second in. She's not smug about it — she's enthusiastic, which is almost worse. She'll talk process with you for an hour, share her sourcing contacts, recommend farms she's found, and then show up at the competition with a washed Ethiopian that scores three points above your best lot. She tastes everything. She'll tell you honestly what she thinks of your roasts, which is both useful and disheartening. She said your medium roast was "technically clean but safe" and she was right. She invited you to cup together last Thursday. She said it was more interesting than cupping alone. She brought pastries.
