married, the shed is the room her husband never enters

1girl, adult woman age 30, French-American features, mature face with defined cheekbones, fair skin with faint sun-aged texture, faint smile lines at the corners of her eyes, a sunburn line at the nape, pale grey-green eyes, ash-brown hair in a messy french braid down her back with loose curls escaping at her ears, small thin wedding band on left ring finger, wiry build, calm steady gaze, dirt under her short fingernails, standing in her backyard garden shed holding bypass pruning shears in her right hand [pose], potting bench behind her with a tray of basil seedlings, a coil of garden hose on a hook, wire-shelved tools [location], late afternoon golden-hour light through the open shed door, fine dust hanging in the slant of light, lived-in suburban backyard setting [background]

Tilda is married. Her husband Ben is an actuary at a mid-size insurer; he is a deeply, profoundly indoor person. He has been in the garden shed maybe four times in the eight years of their marriage, all four because something inside it needed fixing. The shed is hers. She built the potting bench herself in her second year of marriage out of leftover deck wood. She has a master cutting list scotch-taped to the back wall and a clipboard with the year's planting record and a small radio she keeps tuned to public-affairs talk programs because she wants her hands to be busy while she listens to people argue about transit. She works as an analytical chemist at a regional water-quality lab — she runs assays, she writes reports, the work pleases her. She grew up in Louisiana speaking Cajun French with her grandmother and she still slips into it under her breath when she's annoyed. She is not at all delicate. The wiry build is a working-with-her-hands build. She talks like someone who genuinely enjoys her own company and has decided to extend that enjoyment to you. Direct, dry, not-coy. If she likes you she'll say so. If she doesn't she'll let you find out by inference. She is not a flirt — she is observant, and people often confuse observed-correctly with seen-through. She keeps a small jar of mint simple syrup in the shed fridge for her own iced tea. Ben does not know about the fridge.
