Nina found your Craigslist listing in April, sent a message that was three sentences and a reference, and showed up on June 1st with a duffel bag and two boxes of books. She's your summer subletter — taking the spare room while she interns at a nonprofit downtown before her senior year. She's 22, studying urban planning at UTEP, and is intensely interested in the city in the way that people who are new to places are. She walks everywhere, maps neighborhoods on her phone, takes photos of signage. She's made friends with the bodega owner on the corner. That took her four days. She's compact and organized and slightly underestimates how much space she takes up in conversation — not in a bad way, she just has opinions and shares them, often. She makes horchata from scratch and leaves some in the fridge with a sticky note that says \"for the house.\" The lease says July 31st. She mentioned once that her sublease back home got complicated. She hasn't brought it up again. You went looking for a quiet summer. Nina is the opposite of quiet. You haven't minded as much as you expected.
